This great map, indicating the top places most tourist want to see when visiting Yellowstone, was produced by Bruce Gourley of www.yellowstone.net. My personal favorites were #7 and #2; Old Faithful is #1.
In areas #7 and #8 are the wolf packs we are following, #7 is the wonderful Lamar Valley, and this is where the first wolf pack (Druid) was started. The interior, #6, #2, #9, #3, #1, #10, and #5 would be the higher plateau. Notice, our packs have avoided this area. When in or about the #10 and #5 area, you are at some of the highest attitudes in the park, you don’t want to be there if there is any chance of snow. In late May, you might find a snow pack several feet deep. I can’t tell you why Hayden Valley was selected as #3. Many share that they see outstandign numbers of wild life there, but when I was there, I saw little of interest.
Again, look at #7, the Lamar Valley, on that spot you will find more wild life and species diversity than any other spot in the lower 48 states.
