Canis Lupus Print E-mail
He is Canis lupus, or Mr.Gray Wolf to other animals; he stands on top of the food chain in any territory he roams. He is careful, shy, but fears little. Scientists have estimated that the wolf's sense of smell is up to one hundred times more sensitive than a human. The sense of hearing is the next most acute of the wolf senses. Sight is perhaps the least developed of the wolf senses; however, it is every bit as good as human sight.

The Conflict
Gray wolves were reintroduced into Yellowstone National Park in 1995, but historically, wolves lived in Yellowstone as early as 960 years ago some scientists report. In the early 1900’s wolves fell victim to an extensive predator extermination program.

The last wolf was shot in Yellowstone in 1926. Despite much opposition, the gray wolf was finally reintroduced to Yellowstone National Park 69 years later. How has this impacted the ecological balance? In examining this controversy, students will gain greater proficiencies in science, mathematics, and communication.
