Formed 1996 from members of Crystal Creek pack and Rose Creek pack, currently ~24 wolves
“The Leopold pack was the first pack to form in Yellowstone after the recovery. Wolves of existing packs in Canada were brought to the park in 1995 and 1996. When two wolves, 2M and 7F, left their packs and paired together they formed the first new pack in the park in over 70 years. In honor of this event, the new pack was named after Aldo Leopold, commonly regarded as the father of wildlife conservation, whose positive ideas about the predator’s role in nature led him to advocate wolf recovery in Yellowstone long before the public was ready to agree with him. He once wrote, “only the mountain has lived long enough to listen objectively to the howl of the wolf.” The founding wolves have since passed on, but their offspring lead the largest and most formidable pack in the park, a group of 23 wolves.”
